This week for homework we are going to try something different. Do the activity that follows. Each participant must post their answers in the comments section of the post. No cheating and looking at what everyone else said until you post your answers. If you are not on the team, check out what we are learning. Feeling adventurous? Answer the questions yourself and post your answers in as a comment as well.

How is this a picture of a short term mission trip?
A small group was sent for a short period of time to asses the needs and status of the place they were going.
What was their objective?
The men were sent to scope out the territory; what kinds of people live there, what the crops were, how the cities were. By sending this small group ahead to gather intelligence, plans could be made for the future in a wiser way.
Did everyone come home with the same conclusions?
No, they all thought that the land was great and plentiful, but 10 out of the 12 were afraid of the people of the land and they let that fear overshadow the fact that their God was in control.
Why were Joshua and Caleb able to see the bigger picture?
They were able to see past the circumstances, because they had faith in God. That faith cast out their fear. They remembered how God brought them up out of Egypt and expected him to bring them to the Promised Land.
What was the bigger picture?
That God is control and he told them to go and take over the land, and if he tells us to do it then we will be successful no matter what the odds are against us.
What did you learn that we can apply to our trip?
1. If God has called us to go we must go. As long as he opens the doors we should say “yes Lord” and walk through. We do not need to understand why or how, just obey.
2. I cannot let fear overshadow my faith. The biggest area of this trip that I have to work on fear is the finances. We need a lot of money to go and when I let myself dwell on that I feel anxious. That situation is just too big for me. When people ask me about finances I wonder what they think when I answer, “God will provide. It is no big deal for him and if he is calling us to go, then he will do it.” I hope they don’t think I am not responsible because my answer is so simplistic but the only way I can deal with it is by faith. Like Joshua and Caleb looking back to Egypt, I saw how God worked mightily among us to provide 2 boats for Sudan. Who am I to say that God can’t get us $10,000?
3. If God has called us to go and we don’t then we will miss the blessings of obedience and face the punishment for disobeying.
To God be the Glory,
Ms. Debbie
Numbers 13 & 14:
1. How is this a picture of a short term missions trip?
----God told Moses to send people to the land of Canaan to scope out the land, check out the people, the food, the land itself. Then God told Moses to send Caleb and Joshua out again. It is a missions trip because God told the people to go complete a task for Him. He wanted to show the Israelites that He does not go back on His promises.
2. What was their objective?
----The objective was to see if the land was the land that God had promised the Israelites (a land flowing with milk and honey). They needed to know what the land contained (food, water, and shelter) so they would know if the land was good enough to live on. God's people needed to trust Him.
3. Did everyone come home with the same conclusion?
----No, not everyone did because when they came home, some of the men stirred up the crowd and scared them about the people and the land. They said the men of the land were big and stronger then they. Then some of the people wanted to return to Egypt.
(13:31-32)
4. What was the bigger picture?
----Personally, I think the bigger picture is that no matter how some things may appear, when God makes a promise, He keeps it. Things may seem a little different than expected, or maybe the task may seem more difficult than anticipated, but with God's help, it can be overcome.
5. Why were Joshua and Caleb able to see the bigger picture?
----Because they were filled with a different spirit and followed God completely (14:24).
6. What did you learn that we can apply to our trip?
----This trip may not turn out the way we think it will. But God has a plan. He knows the reason we are going on this trip, He knows the people whose lives we will touch, He knows who he wants us to help. There are reasons beyond what we can fathom, but as long as we abide by the Lord, He will lead us. This trip will be a learning experience for everyone, and we need to give God control of it. He has made promises to His people that He will keep.

How is this a picture of a short term mission trip?
People were sent out to a strange land in order to learn more about it. They discovered the people, food and land. God sent them to complete a task, and do a will just like on a short term mission trip.
What was their objective?
They were supposed to go and find out if the land was suitable. The people were to see if it was indeed flowing in milk and honey. There main objective was to follow God’s will and trust in him alone.
Did everyone come home with the same conclusions?
No. Ten out of twelve of the men were terrified and did not place there trust in God to defeat these people. The other two men did trust God.
Why were Joshua and Caleb able to see the bigger picture?
They had more faith in God. They were willing to follow him because they knew he would not lead them into danger.
What was the bigger picture?
The big picture here is that in order to do anything in life, big or small you need to put all your faith in God. With out faith nothing is possible. I also think something represented here is that God will punish people if they are not doing things for his will. This is done for good and helps people to grow more in him.
What did you learn that we can apply to our trip?
I learned that things are not always going to be easy with getting to service projects, raising money and becoming a team, but if we put all our faith in God he will pull us though. I also personally learned that no matter what happens the Lord is in control and will not put me into something I can not handle.
